How Burnout Changed the Way We Do Hair (For the Better)
Spoiler: It almost broke us. But it also rebuilt everything.
Before there was We Fucking Love Your Hair, there was burnout.
The kind that doesn’t just make you tired… the kind that makes you question everything.
Long hours. Skipped lunches. No boundaries. Unrealistic client expectations.
An industry that rewards overwork and self-sacrifice?
Yeah. Been there. Lived it. Barely made it out.
Here’s how hitting that wall changed the way we do hair, and why we’ll never go back.
✂️ The Hair Industry Was Built on Hustle. And It’s Toxic as Fuck.
Ask almost any stylist, and they’ll tell you:
They’ve worked 10+ hour days without eating.
They’ve taken clients on their day off because they “felt bad saying no.”
They’ve undercharged, overdelivered, and smiled through the burnout.
Because that’s what we were taught.
That “loving your job” meant being available 24/7.
That success was measured by how packed your books were.
That rest was lazy and exhaustion was a badge of honor.
Except… it’s not.
💥 When Everything Broke
In 2019, everything came crashing down for WFLYH founder Franky.
Years of pushing, people-pleasing, and pretending it was fine caught up fast.
I (hi, Franky 👋) was done. Like, seriously-considering-quitting-hair-for-good done.
But instead of walking away, I did something terrifying: I asked for help.
Enter: a business mentor, a fuck-ton of self-work, and a vision for a new kind of salon.
One that prioritized people over performative perfection.
💡 So We Blew It All Up. And Rebuilt It From Scratch.
That breakdown became the breakthrough.
On March 10, 2020 (yep, right before the world shut down), I opened the doors to a tiny private studio with a new way of working:
Hourly pricing — transparent, honest, and free of awkward tipping expectations
Gratuity-free — because we’re professionals, and we price like it
Gender-free — no assumptions, just affirming, personalized care
Boundaries — real ones that protect our energy and yours
Today, We Fucking Love Your Hair is a full-fledged salon.
But the core hasn’t changed. We still run things in a way that keeps our team well, not just busy.
🧠 We Believe Burnout Shouldn’t Be a Job Requirement
We built this space so hairstylists could thrive, not just survive.
We set up systems so our team can actually rest.
We say “no” to hustle culture and “yes” to intentional, sustainable careers.
And we believe your stylist should be just as cared for as you are.
💖 It’s Not Just Better for Us. It’s Better for You.
When we’re not burned out, we can show up fully for you.
We can listen deeper. Think more creatively. Get excited about your transformation.
And deliver a better experience because we’re not running on empty.
Burnout taught us that we can’t pour from an empty cup.
So now we don’t. And the results? Speak for themselves.
TL;DR: Burnout Almost Broke Us. But It Also Made Us Better.
We don’t romanticize the grind anymore. We value sustainability.
We center rest, intention, and community care.
We do hair differently, on purpose.
And if you’re someone who’s been burned by burnout (as a client, a stylist, or just a human in this chaotic world), you’ll feel that difference the moment you walk through our doors.
