Hair Extension Aftercare Guide
Hair Extension Aftercare Guide
How to Keep Your Extensions Looking Expensive (Because They Are)
You just invested in your hair. Let's keep it looking incredible.
Hair extensions are not high maintenance. But they are different maintenance.
Follow this guide and your extensions will:
Last longer
Look better
Feel more comfortable
Protect your natural hair
Skip this stuff and things can get tangled real fast.
The Golden Rules
✔ Brush Gently and Often
✔ Sleep with your Hair Secured
✔ Use Professional Products
✔ Control Your Heat
✔ Pre-Book Regular Maintenance Appointments
Brushing Your Extensions
Brush your hair 2 to 3 times per day.
This prevents tangling and protects your natural hair.
How to brush properly:
Always start at the ends and work your way up
Hold your hair at the root while brushing
Brush before washing
Brush before bed
Avoid:
Aggressive brushing
Brushing soaking wet hair
Skipping brushing for days
Pro tip: Keep a brush in your bag. Wind and extensions are not friends.
Washing Your Extensions
Wash your hair 2 to 3 times per week with a traditional detergent shampoo + conditioner.
Cheat Code → secure your wefts in a low ponytail and wash just the top of your hair + bang area in the kitchen sink :)
Before washing:
Brush thoroughly
Remove all tangles
When washing:
Use lukewarm water
Shampoo gently
Focus shampoo on your scalp
Condition mid lengths to ends
Avoid conditioner directly on bonds, tapes, or beads
After washing:
Gently squeeze out water
Do not rub with a towel
Use a microfiber or soft cotton towel
Brush gently once damp
Drying Your Extensions
Always dry the attachment points completely.
This is important.
Leaving bonds, beads, or tapes damp can cause:
Slipping
Matting
Damage to your natural hair
Best practice:
Blow dry roots first
Then mid lengths and ends
Always use heat protectant (we love K18 oil)
Air drying is fine for mid lengths and ends.
Just make sure the attachment points are completely dry.
Sleeping With Extensions
Never sleep with wet hair.
Before bed:
Brush your hair
Put hair in a loose braid, ponytail, or low bun
Use a silk or satin pillowcase if possible
This helps prevent:
Tangling
Matting
Friction damage
Morning tip:
Brush gently when you wake up.
Heat Styling
Extensions do not get natural oils from your scalp. That means they need extra care.
When using heat:
Always use heat protectant
Use moderate temperatures
Avoid excessive daily heat
Lower heat helps your extensions last longer.
Working Out + Sweating
Before workouts:
Put hair in a braid or low ponytail
After workouts:
Let hair dry
Brush gently
Detangle around attachment points
Sweat is normal. Just do not let tangles sit.
Swimming + Vacation Care
Before swimming:
Braid your hair or tie in a low ponytail
Wet hair with clean water if possible
Apply leave in conditioner
After swimming:
Rinse immediately
Brush gently
Dry attachment points completely
Saltwater and chlorine can dry out extensions quickly. Extra care helps them last.
Products to Avoid
Avoid:
Heavy oils near attachment points
Alcohol heavy products
Sunscreen near bonds or tapes
Sunscreen containing Avobenzone (this ingredient causes a pink/salmon color to stain extensions and is irreversible)
Excessive dry shampoo buildup
When in doubt, ask your stylist.
Maintenance Appointments
Maintenance is not optional. It protects your hair.
Typical maintenance schedule:
Hand tied or wefts: every 6 to 8 weeks
Tape-ins: every 6 to 8 weeks
K-tips: every 3 to 4 months
I-tips: every 6 to 8 weeks
Skipping maintenance can cause:
Tangling
Breakage
Damage to your natural hair
